Great -- and I do mean great -- local seafood. Catfish was really fresh, well-prepared. Half pound of shrimp was fantastic. Big, tasty, butter for dipping. Busy place at lunchtime and beyond. So glad we found it!

Went here for a late lunch to meet family. We waited 1 hour and 20 minutes to get a table for 6. It was worth the wait. Peal and Eat shrimp were amazing! and the fresh seafood is exactly what it states "Fresh" Service was good once seated. this place is not good for large crowds. Check out the bathroom you can take a shower..lol

We went here with a large group which was arranged ahead of time. What food we did receive correctly was good. Some people did complain that their fish was a bit dry but overall the food was ok. Waitress was just run ragged as she had our tables and the rest of restaurant. No salad dressing brought, no mayo, no tartar sauce etc., despite several request. Fault of management not waitress. Don't think I would go back rather disappointed.

This place has a lot of character and great food. The streamed shrimp are out of this world. We also had the soft shell crab and crab cake. We are definitely coming back. Our waitress was so kind to walk us through the menu and all the fresh catch selection. Great stop and easy to get to off of I-75.

We went for lunch while driving down the coast. We sat outside, had our dogs with us. The food was fantastic! I had the blackened grouper sandwich and fries and my husband had the soft shell crab sandwich. Sandwich makes them sound small, but, oh my, they are huge portions and the fries were yummy! Hoping to go back before we leave for home.

Omg you must eat here! We had shrimp and garlic crab clusters. Service was fantastic and the food amazing! Reasonable prices and the give you way more than you can eat. Enjoy!

Read the reviews, thought we would give it a shot. Food was good, WAY OVERPRICED! Holy cow, 3 wraps and a burger, couple of generic drinks and BOOM, 120 dollars later I need to find a part time job to recoup!!!

  • Mini C.

Garlic clusters were soo good! The blue crabs were very good but too much work to clean them. After a couple blue crabs, I just went for only garlic clusters. Key lime pie was also very good, and the service was great!

We felt this restaurant is way over-priced for what you get. The food was nothing special, the corn on the cob was about 3 inches long. Doubtful if we will ever go there again. Two of us order fried lobster pieces (didn't get many). They were pushing certain entrees as they would not be open the following day, so they were probably scimping on the portions.

Back down from MA and Peace River seafoods was my first stop fpr dinner. As usual the all you can eat crabs was absolutely fantastic, had 2 buckets! The waiter was great and very attentive, cant wait to go back again!

Awesome place. Prices have gone up a little bit, but country atmosphere and fresh seafood. Gator Gumbo rivals New Orleans. Great crab cakes and grouper sandwich.

Loved it here. Never had blue crab, the girls were happy to show us how to break them about and eat them. The garlic crabs were my favorite. We did the $20 all you can eat. If you are not a big eater just get one order, otherwise indulge in the all you can eat. We will be back!

Wonderful! Very fresh seafood prepared very well. Everything was delicious. The biggest challenge was to save room for their excellent key lime pie. Helpful staff. A rustic setting, and very comfortable.

  • Sarah B.

This place has insanely good seafood.. So much fresh and delicious seafood for a good price. A half dozen crabs, dozen oysters, dozen clams, dozen shrimp, gator gumbo, and beer for $100. The crabs and oysters were so good. Oysters are only half steamed, so perfect. Shrimp could've been slightly less steamed. Our waitress was great and we sat at the dog-friendly table. They were great to the pups. Getting the check was slow at closing time.

Oh my goodness, that was yummy!! And the lunch deals are AMAZING!!! Go. Go now! Eat up!!! I had the crabs and my daughter had the seafood chowder and it was all amazing! I'll be back!!!

  • Joe S.

The prices were fantastic and the soft-shell crabs were wonderful! We were in Florida for a week and this was the only restaurant with blue crabs! THE ONLY ONE! I ordered the soft-shell sandwich and it came with two perfectly fried softshell crabs. This place is not upscale, fancy, or even dignified. I think they would take offense to any one of those words. Its just lots of good seafood and beer at good prices.

  • Craig P.

Good food and atmosphere, large portion of blue crabs. The best key lime pie in Punta Gorda and Kelly's Parrots are humorous!!! Only draw back was an excessive amount of seasoning!!!

Hands down the best peel and eat shrimp I've had in my life. So unbelievably fresh, perfectly cooked, I could've eaten a pound myself! DEFINITELY WORTH A STOP if you're on 75! It's under a mile from the exit. My sister and I were driving from Tampa to Bonita Springs and needed a snack. I saw this little highway sign and made an executive decision that our snack was going to be seafood, not crunchy bagged gas station stuff. An adorable little 1920s bungalow has been converted into a restaurant and seafood market. And have no fear! If you're with a non-seafood-eater, there are plenty of options for them too. We split one of the specials: crab cake, 1/2 lb. peel-and-eat shrimp, corn, and potatoes for $19.95. They bring complimentary smoked fish (mullet) spread with saltines to all patrons. The crab cake was good too. Not Maryland style, but still mostly crab with just some herbs and enough fill to bind it all together. We both agreed it was a fantastic snack. Both servers (a guy and a girl) were extremely nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. The black cats who live there are quite sweet, the floors, tables, and restrooms were clean, and the decor was adorable. You can tell they really try here. The whistling green parrot and giant goldfish in the pond were entertaining as well, and you can eat inside or outside on the shaded and covered deck. Can't wait to go back!

On vacation on the road, used Yelp since we didn't know of any restaurants in the area. We were delighted and surprised to find such great fresh seafood in a place without much else anywhere around. Only one gas station at this exit. Hubby had the Gator Gumbo, waitress recommended since he likes spicy and loves gumbo. He thought it was as good as any he's had in Nawlins. I had the Crab Cake with 1/2 lb. peel & eat shrimp. Both came with 1/2 ear of delicious corn, gumbo had a biscuit, mine had new potatoes. Fries were offered as a substitute. The shrimp were large, fresh and perfectly cooked. The crab cake was good but not the best ever. We were too full for the key lime pie, but people at the next table said it was wonderful. And you will be talking to people at the other tables. Others have written negatively about the physical appearance, so we weren't expecting much. It is very rustic but I've seen worse. It has a decent size indoor restaurant, a little dining porch and a large outdoor covered dining deck and they even had live music. The wait staff was super friendly and efficient. We'll definitely make this a regular stop when we are en route to St. Pete.

Fantastic fresh sea food at very reasonable prices-our party ate for a little over $100. Went with the crab cake and half pound of peel and eat shrimp. Perfection! Served with baby potatoes and corn on the cob for $19.95. Also indulged in the homemade key lime pie-little piece of heaven and will go back!

I ordered 2 dozens of steamed oyster for $19.00. It was a real disappointment. Most of them only half way cooked if not completely raw. I can't eat raw oysters. And they were not really cleaned. One of them was already out of the shell and on the bottom of the tray all nasty. I couldn't even eat half of the whole entree. After we finished eating the waiter came to give us a check and asked how everything was and I had to tell him honestly. He seemed a little offended and said I could have asked them to cook it longer. And he didn't even bother to tell his boss. They also have a black cat sitting next to customers when they are eating waiting for some fish crumbs to be fed. She moves around from table to table. I told the waiter I was allergic to cats and also had a phobia and he said she was a good cat and wouldn't hurt me. My friend had to tell him that was not how phobia worked let alone allergy. They never moved the cat. My first visit to Port Charlotte and a bad restaurant experience. One more thing. If you are corn person the corn was so bland. It wasn't sweet corn. f you

What a great find! This place is a must. The fish was extremely fresh. The staff was so friendly and down to earth. My beautiful bride and I bought fish and soft shell crab to make at home. We can't wait to return!

  • Kent M.

My 2nd time here. Food is fab. I had not eaten soft shell crabs prior. They are now my fav. Also had gumbo, shrimp and lobster plates. Everything best of. Will return absolutely. Probably best ever.

I am a big seafood lover and travel all over the world and this positively one of my favorite restaurants in the country. Everything here is fresh and caught daily. I have tried every item on the menu is nothing short of outstanding. I'm a blue crab lover so obviously when they have large ones in that is my first choice. The steamed shrimp are fresh and delicious. You can get a 1/2lb or 1 lb, they stem them to perfection and they melt in your mouth. A little dip in the clarified butter kicks them up a notch. :) Gator gumbo is fantastic, if you're a gumbo lover you have to give this a try. The staff and service is OUTSTANDING. Very attentive, and knowledgeable of each and every menu item. They have a daily specials menu as well as a large selection of fish. For example, yesterday they had grouper, mahi, tilefish, triple tail, hogfish, yellowtail, mullet, swordfish, salmon (flown in from Alaska, never farm raised), and mussels served in a garlic sauce. The fresh fish is served grilled, blackened or fried. My favorite is blackened, they season it perfectly, not too much blackening like some places tend to do, which can overpower the flavor of the fish and make it too salty. Their fries are the best I've ever had. Always served crisp and piping hot. They don't simp on the potions here. The homemade soups are fabulous. They have a different soup everyday. Clam chowder, seafood chowder and conch chowder are my favorites. If it was my last day on earth I'd have a bowl of seafood chowder, a 1/2 doz. blue crabs, 1/2 doz. shrimp and a piece of their key lime pie...lol. All I can say is you HAVE to give this place a try. Get there early (5:00) or have lunch there. They get very busy and sell out of the large crabs and also some of the fish. If you're lucky they sometimes have the all-u-can eat med. crabs. They stop serving crabs at 7:00. I'm heading there tonite, I got hungry writing this. Hope you enjoy as much as I do. Oh yeah, one last thing. Their Mullet dip which is served complementary before your meal is over-the-top. They also sell it for $5.00 to go. It's great for parties and football games. Serve it on saltines with a nice cold beer! Yum!!!

Great peel and eat shrimp and crab cakes! Nice outdoor seating although windy and cool the day we were there. Husband had the blue crab, very good and an extra large serving. Not too far off I75.

  • Allison L.

Stopped on our way up 75. Found it on yelp. Went for the idea of blue crabs but ended up with crawfish. If you want the blue crab make sure you are there before 7 because at 7 they stop taking orders for them...we were there at 7:03pm...they mean business. That was my only down fall with the place other wise I would have given it a full five for a great find!

Cute, but dumpy and cold if the weather is not warm. Key lime pie is excellent, service was fine. Meals are overpriced and just average.

  • Jenna D.

My family gives this place a 4 star. The flavor of the crab and fish was great. Our waitress was excellent too. Overall this place is good. It's a little expensive but that's to be excepted for crab. I posted a pic of both sides of the menu for everyone. They have all you can eat blue crab on Saturday from 4pm-7pm for $20. Me personally I would order something else if you are not into spending a lot of time breaking apart legs for only a little bit of meat. Small crabs little meat but packed with a lot of flavor. It's a good place to try once but not to go back regularly.

    (4)
  • Michael M.

The food was pretty good. Service was very slow, very long time for the food to come out. But the food was very tasty. They Were out of the key lime pie and wouldn't serve some of the menu items after 7. Prices were on the expensive side.

I really love coming here with my parents when I'm in Florida. This place is basically a house converted into a restaurant. It's really nothing to look at as you approach, but looks can be deceiving! The price for a dozen large crabs is amazing, $35. This would be at least double the price back in Maryland. Most crab eaters love to eat outside with cold beer, but I'd much rather eat inside because of the bugs. Unfortunately, where the outside tables are, there is a little stream of water that seemed to attract what the employees referred to as " love bugs." I can assure their was no "love" lost between me and those irradiating nuisances. From I have been told, it's better to come early because they only serve crabs until 7pm. My parents have also told me that depending on who you get service can range from mediocre to really good. One piece of advice for the owners, get rid of the gentleman that seats customers. He greeted my mother at the door like a hockey goalie. My mother was not amused. He even told us to hurry up and decide where to sit. I must also recommend the Key Lime Pie to any first timers.

NIce rustic crab shack. This was my second visit. I had the shrimp creole and Chris had half a dozen blue crabs and the key lime pie. Both were quite good. The service was great. If you are looking for fine dining, this is not it. This is good eating.

I would love to review this restaurant, however we arrived at 7:31 and they take their last customers at 7:30 so they would not seat us... Their loss. We drove down the road to Laishley's Crab House for some wonderful seafood.

I've had their fish sandwich before and tried the shrimp creole this time. Outstanding!

We've been here twice now in the past year and had very good meals both times. Sure, it's a dive in terms of appearance, but hey, dives can be fun. We ate outside both times. Kind of a wooded setting w/ a view of the highway, but for us Michiganders, eating outside in January is a bonus some don't comprehend. Key Lime pie is some of the best we have had. On both visits we each had a piece there and took another piece each for later that nite. The cats and dogs are no big deal. Again, go knowing that it IS kind of a dive, but I've had a lot of substandard meals in fancy digs. Go for the fresh seafood, the cold tea and the key lime pie and count yourself blessed to have found the place.

  • Mark C.

This place was off the charts...the dishes we had were both so good it's hard to explain. The portions too much to possibly eat...can't wait to go again....

    (5)
  • David A.

Way, way, over priced. Shrimp creole only so-so and lukewarm when served.

    (1)
  • Michael J.

Fresh crabs, clams and oysters. Jumbo shrimp and red snapper. All cooked fresh. A waiter even gave a lesson in opening up a blue crab to get at the delectable meat. Newspapers on the table. My kind of place.

If the weather permits, take a seat on the shady porch and get ready to feast on some really tasty seafood. This is a perfect spot to roll up your sleeves and just keep the food coming as you sample whatever the local crabbers and fishermen are bringing right from the water to this capably managed kitchen. The fish spread on crackers was a tasty start to what turned out to be a seafood feast that included smoked mullet, blue crab, boiled shrimp plus lots more and featured a superb key lime pie for a fantastic finish. Housed in an authentic Florida Cracker home, there is indoor and outdoor seating. The staff members are friendly, helpful and love to keep the food coming as well as keep your beverages from running low. Rolls of paper towels top the tables and that's great because you are likely to go through several before you finally finish your meal. For a taste of Florida and a lot of tasty seafood, this place now ranks among my all-time favorites.

  • Barb G.

Four of us went out of our way to drive here for dinner based on the other reviews. First, the bathroom is disgusting. Then, everything on the menu is about $20 or more. Some much more. A bowl of gumbo for $17, seriously? And no smaller "taste" option? For a little bitty dive place, it's way too expensive. We didn't even bother to order food, had one drink and left.

    (2)
  • Terry H.

I only rated this 3 stars because of inconsistent results. The reason to come here is the Blue Crabs, this is where they ship the Crabs to the rest of the East Coast and when they are good, they are very good. They have an all-u-can-eat special, but forget that, they are the small ones, and just order the 1/2 doz. There is plenty. But when the crabs are bad, they are very bad. Second visit, where of course, we brought company to share our find, the crabs smelled strongly of ammonia and tasted nothing like the previous visit. When we showed the first two carbs to our server and had her smell them, they asked if we wanted something else, but we just paid for drinks and appetizer and left, appetite ruined. We did not have to pay for the crabs, but let me tell you, there was a whole lot of attitude from the owner/manager or whoever spoke to us. Like it was our fault? We think it was because it was slow season and they weren't selling, so we got old crabs. Anyway, be careful and if you order take out, check a crab or two before you leave the premises. The atmosphere is very casual, think picnic tables, beer and crab seasoning up to your elbows, as opposed to fine dining, which is OK if you know that going in. Don't expect cold A/C either.

Just went in Jan 2014. I share the concern of others re: sanitation and dogs . . . I'm allergic and don't understand why they allow dogs at all. My husband had the creole shrimp and it was pretty good, but I can make that at home just as tasty. I had the blue crab 1/2 dozen and they were the medium size. An awful lot of work for a small amount of crab, and I did not think they were strictly fresh. They were not smelling of ammonia, but they were not just off any boat . . . the melted butter is probably not 100% butter, and definitely NOT clarified (as in other crab restaurants like Mar Vista on Longboat Key). I had to ask for a nut cracker - they just gave me a wooden mallet - and a nut pick - there is no way you could pick these rather small crabs without a pick!! I don't think I would go back, but I might give them a try during stone crab season (which I think is now, winter, but they didn't have any) because those are much easier to eat, or if they have large crabs, but I would call first to find out!! I live in town and have been here only a few years, but I am dismayed at the dearth of fresh fish available to cook at home, and the restaurants are expensive and mediocre for the most part.

    (2)
  • Maggie J.

I've been here several times. At first it was ok. The stone crab is good. But then I tried some of the other dishes. It seems to be getting worse every time I go. I went recently and the cashier was very rude and not helpful to my request. Also, I agree with Kevin (below). The place is old and run down. A sanitary food prep area is a big concern of mine as well. Animals have no place in restaurants unless they are on the menu.

    (2)
  • Kevin D.

Everyone says it is a Must go to. Well Food is different The bare stuff is good but actual prepared meals gumbo etc have a lot to be desired . I do not like places that you can bring your dog "Service dogs ok" but pets pleaze stop. The place its self has a large bird in a cage in entryway and cats running all over. I prefer to eat at some place that is not a Vets office. Plus the building is old falling down makes me wonder about sanitary conditions. Some people call it character.

Very unique eating spot. Built around an old house. Covered and open seating available. Co joined with a crab / lobster fishing operation, boats were coming in from their morning run as we ate lunch. Would not recommend for small children. No children's menu and too many interesting things for them to play with / destroy. The grouper sandwich can ordered as a salad. Very delicious with a unique seasoning. Gator gumbo very spicy. They only provided a fork, which I was able to finish the meal, with the biscuit to soak up the remainder for a clean bowl.

A true gem in the rough. We will drive the 80 mi roundtrip again for this place. "In the rough" refers to the location. We did a double-take as we drove by on the road ... did a u turn and came back. The decor, openness and outdoor rooms are perfect. The food is awesome. Be sure to have some shrimp. I will be going back many times to try other menu items. At the end, I recommend the Key Lime pie ... to die for. And don't forget to buy some fresh smoked fish to take home with you.

  • David C.

"Did you check this place out before you decided to have dinner here?" Asked in cautious tones, my dinner partner wasn't persuaded by the exterior facade of this gem. (Honestly, neither was I) If there is a poster child for don't judge a book by it's cover, it sits near the Peace River in Punta Gorda. There was plenty of seating outside but it was January and the little converted house to restaurant was packed. We were greeted by a very friendly and energetic young man wearing camouflage and sunglasses around his neck. All the tables were full so we sat for 6-8 minutes while a table opened up. After we were seated we learned it's a family operation that serves fresh seafood because they catch what they serve every day! We ordered She Crab soup for a starter and we dug in with our plastic spoons...very quaint. The soup was wonderful, big spoonfuls of crab in every bite! My dinner guest had some steamed shrimp which were plump and looked amazing. I had the shrimp gumbo, which was tasty but not like being in Nawlins if you've ever been. Plus I would have enjoyed a bit more sausage. Regardless of a couple of shortcomings, I'm definitely going to be back when I'm back in SW FL. Good stuff!

Awesome lunch, shrimp creole so delicious! My daughters Grouper sandwich so fresh jumbo seasoned shrimp, crab cakes clams all great. Knowledgable, accommodating and patient servers. Definitely go if in the area.

Have to give this place four stars because it could be a bit more on the ball but as for the all you can eat blue crabs... Awesome. Friendly staff and patrons. If you don't like eating blue crab with fingers, this is not the place for you!

    (4)
  • Jeff K.

If your looking for an out of the way local "real seafood" place, this is the place to go around these parts. Everything is well prepared and just caught "fresh". I had the blue crabs and they were just what I expected. The staff was great, patient because a family member was in a wheel chair, and great with the menu. Be prepared to possibly wait a spell for your table, not very big inside but it is for sure worth the wait. I'll be back for sure.

Awesome place to eat, it`s rustic for sure so wear t-shirt and shorts. Food is really good every time I been. Come early and enjoy some great food. Sit outside and make some new friends. We have a great time talking to folks from all over. Service was good and so is the food. Enjoy!!

Excellent seafood with old Florida atmosphere. Not a big place so in season you may have to wait but well worth it. Friendly staff to go with the great food. Even a seafood market so you can get some fresh to take with you!
